Produktbeschreibung

Common use
Protopic is a topical immunosuppressant used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in patients who do not respond well to conventional treatments like corticosteroids. It works by inhibiting calcineurin, which reduces inflammation and suppresses immune responses in the skin. Protopic helps relieve itching, redness, and swelling associated with eczema flares.

Dosage and direction
Protopic is available as an ointment in 0.03% and 0.1% strengths and should be applied as a thin layer to the affected skin areas. It is typically used twice daily at the beginning of treatment, then reduced to once daily or used intermittently as symptoms improve. Avoid covering the treated areas with bandages unless directed by a physician.

Precautions
Avoid using Protopic on infected, broken, or severely irritated skin. It should not be applied to mucous membranes or used under occlusion. Limit exposure to sunlight and UV light while using the ointment, as tacrolimus may increase skin sensitivity.

Contraindications
Protopic is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to tacrolimus or any component of the formulation. It is not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age. Patients with weakened immune systems or certain skin infections should avoid using this medication unless advised by a doctor.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include burning, stinging, or itching at the application site, especially during the first few days of use. Less frequently, users may experience skin redness, flu-like symptoms, or sensitivity to light. Rare but serious risks include skin infections and possible increased risk of lymphoma or skin cancer with long-term use.

Drug interaction
Tacrolimus may interact with other immunosuppressive agents or systemic medications that affect the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Avoid using other topical products on the same skin area unless prescribed. Discuss all current medications and supplements with your healthcare provider before starting Protopic.

Missed dose
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed application — do not apply extra to make up for it. Continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Overdose
Topical overdose is rare, but excessive application can increase side effects. If accidentally ingested or applied in large amounts, seek medical attention. Supportive treatment may be needed in case of systemic absorption.

Storage
Store Protopic at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the tube tightly closed and away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not freeze or store in the bathroom; keep out of reach of children.

Short description
Protopic is a non-steroidal ointment used to treat moderate to severe eczema by calming the skin's immune response. It contains tacrolimus, which helps reduce inflammation and itching. The ointment is typically applied to affected areas twice daily and is suitable for intermittent use in sensitive skin areas. While effective, it should be used with caution due to potential long-term risks.
